Words of Affirmation and Gifts

I am refreshing my memory on the Five Love Languages for my kids sake and today we officially decided what Lydia's were:

I bought her a new shirt at the Goodwill for $.99
She IMMEDIATELY had to put it on upon my arrival home. (never mind that it's a tank top I bought for the summer....really, I can't wait for spring, there is literally a foot of snow on the ground and I bought a tank top!) She was overjoyed at having new clothes that she went from being in a kinda of grumpy mood to talking 100 mph and dancing around the house

skipping ahead an hour:

We had some of her friends over to play later on and the first thing she does is get her shirt in the little boy's face and ask "Like my shirt Conner? Like my shirt? Like my shirt Conner? Like it? Like my shirt? etc...."
Conner did not care to even look at her shirt let alone say he liked it.
Once we peeled Lydia out of his face we assured her her shirt was 'beautiful' and she was good to go and play, but not until then.
All was well for the next 2 hours but as they were leaving, she started all over again only with a little more persistence.
Daddy intervened and Conner was never forced to tell Lydia that he just didn't care, sparing Lydia's self-worth for the rest of her life (or so you'd thought).

So, Words of Affirmation and Gifts it is...not to down play the physical. Maybe she's just one of those perfectly rounded kids who has all the gifts - (that was supposed to be funny, if you're not laughing, start now - she's cute and smart, but far from 'perfectly rounded'.)
