below is an e-mail from my mom I received today about a headline that ran this morning and has been heavy on my heart all day:
(fyi before you read - my brother is in Afghanistan and headed home in just a few weeks)
Just wanted to let you all know that Jonathan is ok. The attack that took place on Sunday that is all over the news right now was his unit. Nine of his guys were killed. Jonathan was in heavy fighting for two days. He and 4 other Combat Engineers ( which made his Dad proud) fought in a forward position, just outside of the OP that was over run. Jonathan said that at one point, he looked around and knew beyond any doubt that God was right there, protecting them. He said that for the most part, what was being reported in the news was correct, however, it was conveyed that it was a "sneak attack" while everyone was asleep and Jonathan said that wasn't correct. They were ready, and in defensive positions, when the attack came. There were only about 50 of them, versus 150 insurgents. It was simply a matter of being outnumbered that caused them to sustain the heavy casualties. We can only say"thanks be to God" for protecting our son. Our hearts go out to those families who were expecting to see their soldiers home (in Italy) next week.Their lives have been changed forever. Jonathan's platoon leader and a soldier from his squad were among the nine. They are now back at their main base camp, preparing to leave. There will be no more patrols or missions. For all of you who have prayed over him, supported and loved him, you can give praise and thanks for this profound answer. Our hearts are eternally grateful.
phew and sad all at the same time.
they have been there over a year - my prayers are all over those families today.

I was thinking about Jonathan as I saw the news (as I do anytime I hear about attacks in Afghanistan) and am relieved to hear that he's ok and on his way home.
My heart goes out to the families who are now grieving for their sons, husbands & brothers. I can only imagine their pain right now.
Thanks for keeping us posted...
I totally have chills...knowing my brother-in-law went through the same thing. He got back safely last week. So glad Jonathan is ok. We'll continue to pray for his safety.
I can't imagine how those families feel-losing their loved ones so close to leaving for home. My good friend returns the beginning of Aug. from Iraq, Lord willing. A big thanks to your brother for serving so bravely.
Kindof seems unimportant, but I logged on to see when we get to see a new cake???
As I wake up this morning I realize I have healthy kids and a husband who is at work. My reality is happy and normal. I grieve for those families who are waking up, if they even got to sleep last night at all, and their reality is so different. It's the nightmare as military families we all worry about, God be with those families who are in the middle of the nightmare.

Praise God for His protection. I will pray for the families of those wonderful soldiers who will not be coming home to their earthly home. I am thankful that Jonathan has both earthly and heavenly homes and the the loving Father chose to let him stay with us longer. None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow but he has been face to face with that reality for 15 months. Hopefully we can all get together for some personal rejoiceing time soon.

Thanks for posting that. Glad to hear your bro is okay and coming home to his family. Will be praying for the families who won't get to see their men come home.
